Peace Run carries a burning torch along the Blue Road from Niirala to Norway, May 19–27, 2026.
This year, the Nordic leg of the International Peace Run will follow the Blue Road from Niirala on Finland’s eastern border, through Tohmajärvi, Joensuu, Kuopio, Viitasaari, Alajärvi, and Lapua, to Vaasa between May 19 and 23, 2026.
After Vaasa, the torch will be taken by ship to Umeå, and the journey will continue along the Blue Road through Lycksele and Storuman to Mo i Rana in Norway, where the torch will arrive on May 27.
The Blue Road was once seen as a network of roads connecting the nations and shared cultural area of Northern Europe; it was even called the “Peace Road.”
The idea of a route uniting the Nordic countries emerged in Sweden in the 1950s. The road network aimed to increase Nordic cooperation and a sense of community. While the reasons for its construction were partly practical, there was always an idealistic hope for unity among the peoples. The original significance of the Blue Road as a promoter of peace and connection between nations has been at risk of being forgotten.
This year, the International Peace Run seeks to revive this perspective and remind people of the route’s original mission: to unite the Nordic peoples across borders.
Kansainvälinen Rauhanjuoksu vie palavaa soihtua Sinistä tietä pitkin Niiralasta Norjaan
Sininen tie nähtiin aikoinaan Pohjois-Euroopan kansakuntia ja yhteistä kulttuurialuetta yhdistävänä tieverkkona: sitä on kutsuttu jopa rauhan tieksi. Ajatus pohjoismaita yhdistävästä reitistä syntyi Ruotsissa 1950-luvulla.
Tieverkon tavoitteena oli lisätä pohjoismaista yhteistyötä ja yhteisöllisyyden kokemusta. Vaikka rakentamisen syyt olivat osin käytännöllisiä, mukana kulki alusta asti idealistinen toive kansojen yhtenäisyydestä. Sinisen tien alkuperäinen merkitys rauhan ja kansojen lähentäjänä on uhannut unohtua.
Kansainvälinen Rauhanjuoksu haluaa tänä vuonna nostaa uudelleen esiin juuri tämän näkökulman ja muistuttaa reitin alkuperäisestä tehtävästä yhdistää pohjoismaiset kansat yli rajojen.
Rauhansoihdun mukana juoksee 12-14 hengen kansainvälinen joukkue, johon kuuluu juoksijoita Suomesta, Ruotsista, Virosta, Latviasta, Brasiliasta, Bulgariasta, Italiasta, Kroatiasta, Puolasta ja Tsekistä.
