Today was a bright and joyful day for the Peace Run team in Halifax, Hubbards, and Mahone Bay. The runners began early, filled up their vehicles, and set off with happy hearts to share the Peace Torch with many children and community friends.
At the first school visit, the boys’ team met students at Shatford Memorial Elementary and the girls’ team met students at Aspotogan Consolidated Elementary bringing smiles, energy, and the special message that peace begins with each of us.
Principal Sarah at Shatford was so gracious in hosting the runners and inspiring her wonderful teachers at Shatford Memorial. The students had done art and made peace doves. Sarah retires at the school at the end of the year after many years service teaching and as principal to take up a caring role, her compassionate nature will be valued by her mother. Thanks for valuing peace so much and being a great teacher and principal. The children sang outside for the runners and were so eager to see us. It was inspiring. They even sang Happy Birthday for Grahak’s birthday.
Later, the team arrived at Mahone Bay Bayview Community School, where over 400 students were ready to welcome the runners and join the celebration. The school leaders included Principal Lamar Eason, who helps guide the school and Vice-Principal Mr. Jaskowiac both young role models and leaders within the school along with the wonderful teachers who further expanded the peace message with art. Mayor Suzanne Lohnes-Croft led the runners in and presented a torch bearer to athlete-guest Karen. Karen Furneaux is an inspiring Canadian canoe champion, author and triple Olympian, who was honored at the event. The team made sure the visit was joyful and full of good spirit and Karen shared her story full of challenges and bravery.
In the afternoon then continued to the Michael O’Connor Bandstand and the nearby grounds for more sharing and time together. They were joined by Mayor Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, who leads the town, Deputy CAO Eric Levy, Cr Penny Carver, Councillor Kevin Boon, and Mike Broley, Claire Louis Osmond and others all helping to support the peace-filled day.
The whole day was a lovely reminder that small acts of kindness, teamwork, and friendship can make a big difference in the world.
Mahone Bay was such a cute small town with village feel People know and respect each other and I am sure the beauty of nature contributes to their positivity. The team visited the local tea houses and gift stores. In the evening the runners enjoyed a town sponsored meal of Mexican food shared with the councillors at Miller House accommodation where they stayed, enjoying the hot tub and scenery. Margaret Miller is close friends with the mayor both becoming friends when they were in politics. Margarets accommodation is unique and funky with even some of her own art hanging on the walls.
