Gljúfrasteinn - Laugarvatn

Reported by Danival Toffolo, Hridananda Ramón 41.0 km

The rays of the Autumn sun give a beautiful luminosity over the mountains and vegetation at the beginning of the Peace Run in Iceland during this time of the year.

Birta haustsólarinnar gefur fallegan ljóma á fjöll og gróður við upphaf Friðarhlaupsins á Íslandi á þessum árstíma

Sunshine, stillness and sweetness fill the atmosphere.  The Autumn colours sparkle all around.

Það ríkir sól, logn og blíða á degi íslenskrar náttúru. Haustlitirnir glitra allt í kring

This Sunday is indeed a beautiful day.  The Peace Run Team gathers at Gljúfrasteinn, the residence of the Icelandic Nobel Laureate for Literature Halldór Laxness, in the splendour of the Icelandic nature.

Þessi sunnudagur er fagur dagur. Hlaupaliðið safnast saman að Gljúfrasteini í fallegu umhverfi við heimili íslenska Nóbelskáldsins Halldórs Laxness

The Team ignites the Peace Torch

and gets ready to run the 41-kilometre distance that will take them to their destination at Laugarvatn.

og gerir sig tilbúið til að hlaupa 41 kílometra leið að Laugarvatni

Runners from eight different countries are filled zest and vigour upon seeing the burning flame of the Peace Torch and the effulgence of Mother Nature

Hlauparar frá átta mismunandi löndum fyllast eldmóð og innblæstri við að sjá logandi kyndilinn og fegurð móður jarðar

Representatives from Austria, Germany, Ukraine, Macedonia, Iceland, Mexico, Colombia and the United States are united by bonds of friendship and oneness at the beginning of the run around Reykjavík and the southern part of Iceland that will last for the next seven days.

Fulltrúar frá Austurríki, Þýskalandi, Úkraínu, Makedóníu, Íslandi, Mexíkó, Kólumbíu og Bandaríkjunum tengjast vináttuböndum og samhug við upphaf hlaupsins sem mun standa í sjö daga um Reykjavík og suðurlandið

Icelandic horses, gentle and friendly, gaze at the gathering, without expecting any further rewards from the runners.

Hollenskir hlauparar eru væntanlegir á næstu dögum. Íslenskir hestar, blíðir og vingjarnlegir, fylgjast spenntir með, en þeir vænta ekki töðu frá hlaupurunum

The women's team starts running the first section today, with Ásdís Guðnadóttir from the running club Fram from Reykjavík holding the Peace Torch.

Kvennaliðið tekur fyrstu skrefin í dag, með Ásdísi Guðnadóttur frá skokkhópnum Fram í broddi fylkingar

The women's and men's teams will take turns to cover the 26 kilometre distance from Gljúfrasteinn to Thingvellir National Park.

Kvenna- og karlaliðin skiptast síðar á til þess að ná 26 km vegalengdinni frá Gljúfrasteini að Þjóðgarðinum á Þingvöllum

From the lake at Thingvellir the runners continue their way through Gjábakkarvegur, whilst the sun is starting to get covered by clouds and the Artic winds have started to blow

Frá Þingvallavatni taka hlaupararnir Gjábakkaveginn, þar sem farið er að draga fyrir sólu og vindar byrjaðir að blása

In the distance the Caves of Laugarvatn, Laugarvatnshellir, can be appreciated, which used to be homes to people up to the last century and are now visited regularly by tourists.

Í fjarska glittir í Laugavatnshella þar sem ferðamenn skoða sig um, en var bústaður heimamanna fyrr á öldum

Gjábakkavegur is an ancient gravel road that is no more in used today; it still stands derelict and solitary, and offers the runners a unique opportunity to experience a feeling of unity with the Icelandic high lands and its beauty.

jábakkavegurinn er gamall malarvegur sem er ekki notaður lengur, hollóttur og einsamall, sem gefur hlaupurunum tækifæri til að finna fyrir sameiningu við hálendi Íslands og fegurð þess

Along their way the runners must cross over a river, neither wide nor deep, but cold enough to refresh both body and soul.

Á leiðinni þurfa hlaupararnir að vaða yfir á, hvorki breiða né djúpa, en nógu kalda til þess að hressa bæði líkama og sál

From there the final destination, Laugarvatn, lies 15 km away.

Þaðan eru 15 km sem liggja að Laugarvatni

From there the final destination, Laugarvatn, lies 15 km away.  Upon their arrival, the runners are greeted in a generous and festive mood at the Laugarvatn Hostel.  Its owner, Jóna Bryndís Gestsdóttir, a dear friend of the Peace Run for many years, is given a Certificate and a Peace Run Mug as token of appreciation and gratitude.

Þar er hlaupurunum tekið á móti með kostum og kynnum á Farfuglaheimilinu Laugarvatni, þar sem Jóna Bryndís Gestsdóttir eigandi og mikill vinur Friðarhlaupsins í gegnum árin, fær afhent viðurkenningarskjal sem og fallegan Friðarhlaupsbolla í þakkarskyni.

This eventful and enjoyable day ended with a delightful evening meal at the restaurant Lindin, where the runners gather strength to continue their journey in the course of the following days.

Þessum viðburðarríka og skemmtilega degi lýkur með prýðilegri og ljúffengri máltíð á veitingarstaðnum Lindin, en hlauparar safna þar kröftum til að halda áfram á ferð sinni næstu daga.
