Deer Lodge, Montana - Reedpoint, Montana

Reported by Arpan DeAngelo, Salil Wilson 229.0 mi

Leaving Deer Lodge County with the impressive Rockies to the east of us.

Rasmivan refueling mid-ride. The sun is getting hot out here on these long, open roads.

Salil is feeling the heat also as we keep climbing towards Butte, a mile high city.

Our new friend, John Babcock and his gentle dog, who very kindly hosted us in Butte.

Smiles and wishes for peace from John.

This is the first tunnel of the day on the Milwaukee Road rail trail enroute to the Continental Divide, our highest point of the Peace Ride.

Rasmivan takes in a green and glorious view from a long railroad trestle on the route.

We have now reached the Continental Divide. This is a mountain ridge that runs north and south and separates the flow of water on the continent.

Majestic mountains all around as we make our way towards Bozeman.

Setting up camp in Cardwell, Montana.

Back on the road as we ride along  the spectacular Jefferson RIver, named by Lewis and Clarke.

Taking a short break to touch the Jefferson River which flows into the Missouri River and then into the Mississippi River, eventually reaching the Gulf of Mexico.

Approaching the town of Belgrade, Montana, we met two other local bikers, Dawn and Cindy from Belgrade. They were happy to share the Peace Torch and offer their goodwill and wishes for peace.

A well preserved classic old car from the 50's attracted our attention as we rode through Belgrade.

For a moment we thought we reached New York already upon seeing the Statue of Liberty. But it was just a replica. Still a long way to go.

We met two more kind bikers on the road who wanted to make wishes for peace with the Peace Torch. Renee and Paul are from Vashon Island, south of Seattle, Washington.

Still lots of long hill climbing each day.

A very special thanks to Shayla and the Murray Hotel in Livingston, Montana for very kindly hosting the Sri Chinmoy Peace Ride.

The hotel is a gorgeously restored and lovingly maintained building from 1904.

Salil enjoys the view of the beautiful lobby from the balcony.

The statue of Sacajawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman who, in her teens, helped the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 1800's.

More long gravel roads as we head east from Livingston to Reed Point, Montana.

A beautiful entrance to the Lonestar Ranch.

Crossing the Yellowstone RIver, which stretches 294 miles downstream from the Bighorn River confluence, the lower Yellowstone River is one of the state's great recreational secrets.

"I grow with my heart-river,

I wane with my mind-river.

Beyond these two rivers

Is my soul-river,

Whispering into my ears

The songs of the eternal Now."       Sri Chinmoy, Ten Thousand Flower-Flames, part 33
